Vocational Skills, Panacea For Self-Reliance.

Rachael Okporu

With the economic crunch biting hard on Nigerian, there is need for citizens to have a change of mind and intent in securing a white collar jobs.

However, in recent times Vocational skills which seem to be ignored by many, but paving ways for others, is no doubt a development that should be embraced by all. A vocational skill focuses on practical application of skills in a specific area of interest and often takes place outside the four walls of a classroom setting as students are exposed to hands-on activities through firsthand experience.

Findings have shown that a large number of employers today support the need for vocational skills among individuals as it is of utmost importance, as academic qualifications.

Often time’s many have thought on cost and challenges of learning a skill more than the benefits it puts through, but do these thoughts really count if being independent is the aim of every young graduate?

Recently government encouraged the need for vocational skills and entrepreneur among young people at various levels like the SAED programme in the National Youth Service Corp.

However with the birth of several businesses one wonders how effective it is for an individual to strive and become outstanding in a skill, but self development and determination plays an important role in attaining excellence.
