Army arrest soldiers for molesting physically challenged in Onitsha

By Wahab Akanji, Abuja

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of two soldiers belonging to the Military Police who allegedly brutalised a physically challenged person on Wednesday in Onitsha.

The soldiers had accosted the physically challenged in a wheelchair, dragged him off and dealt him several strokes of horse whip allegedly for wearing a military camouflaged shirt.

In a statement, Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman said the Army will not tolerate any acts of indiscipline.

“In line with our zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conducts especially in relation to violation of human rights, we wish to further state that the soldiers involved have since been identified and apprehended.

“They have also been charged for assault by their Commanding Officer. Similarly, troops have been warned to desist from such acts that infringe on human rights and cast serious aspersions on the good image of the Nigerian Army.

“The public should please regard this ugly incident as an isolated case which is not true reflection of the Nigerian Army,” Usman said.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army Engineers (NAE) Corps has began access road clearance and construction of shooting range inside Sambisa forest.

This is in line with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, that this year’s Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship (NASAC 2017), be held in Sambisa Forest, Borno State.

The NAE corps has mobilized to site and commenced access roads clearance and construction of range and other facilities.
