Tension in Ondo community over traditional stool

By Samuel Faleye, Akure

There exists palpable tension in Ipele community in Owo Local Government area of Ondo State over who becomes the next Olupele of Ipele.

The stool became vacant, when late Oba Olaleye Alade, from Igemo ruling house joined his ancestors on February 5, 2015.

The next ruling house, Ilana which is to produce the king has raised alarm over an alleged plan by some people to impose a candidate, whom they claimed is not a member of the family as the next king.

Those alleged are the kingmakers and the Secretary to Owo Local Government, Mr. Bola Ayeyo.

They were alleged to have perfected their plan to impose one Rotimi Elebeshe, whom they claim is only related to the ruling house through his mother.

Four candidates laying claims to the stool include Victor Aganun, Abdul Balogun, Ige Alaru and Kolawole Temitope had their names submited to the local government on February 29, 2016 but the people were amazed when Elebeshe was later announced as one of the contestants.

Ilana ruling house has already sent petitions to the Ministry of Local government and chieftaincy affairs, Attorney General and Ministry of justice and Owo local government, through its lawyer, Taju Ahmed to stop the government from going ahead with the selection process pending the time the court gives a ruling on a case filed at Owo High Court on the stool.

The family said they were also shocked when the office of the Attorney-General and ministry of Justice informed them that there was no pending case on Olupele’s stool.

In the suit no How/2/2017, which a copy was giving to reporters in Akure, the state capital?, the aggrieved members of the Ilana ruling house are claimants, while Chief Lawani, Yunusa Mayegun, Head of Kingmakers, Chief Lawrence Atewogobye and Owo local government were defedants.

Mayegun was alleged to have written another nomination letter to the council on April 11, 2016
Including the name of Elebeshe.

Ilana’s family prayed the court declares that the initial nomination letter is the only authentic/lawful letter and also restrict the kingmakers and local council to the same letter.

The family is also praying the court restrains Mayegun as the acting Olulana of Ilana and also restrain the local council from issue another directive to the claimant through Mayegun or any other person for fresh selection process of candidates.

When the Secretary of the council, Ayeyo was contacted he simply said he is from Ipele and he does not want to get involve on the Obaship tussle.
