Odu’a Group rolls out drums to celebrate 40th anniversary

By Ismaila Alamu, Ibadan

The investments company of the six Southwest states in Nigeria, Odu’a Investments Limited, has revealed its plan to become a major player in the global economy within the next 40 years.

The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the company, Mr Adewale Raji, disclosed this while briefing reporters on the activities lined up for the conglomerate’s 40th anniversary.

The anniversary, which features a lecture to be given by a former Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Wale Omole, is slated for Thursday at Premier Hotel, Ibadan.

While Dr Christopher Kolade chairs the lecture, the six Southwest governors will be special guests.

Raji, who agreed that the vision of the founding fathers of the business group has not been fully achieved, said the Board and Management of the company were seeking new ways to strengthen the company and its various subsidiaries to arrive at the global business stage.

Raji said a company such as Samsung is a regional business organization like Odu’a. He said the managers of the company worked hard to make it a successful participant in the national stage before moving to the global stage.

Today, Raji said, Samsung products are some of the most popular in the world, stressing that his team was already working on moving Odu’a to that level within the next 40 years.

Reflecting, the GMD said the challenges before the company today are far more than what other business organizations face due to the vision of the founding fathers and obligations arising from them.

Emphasizing that the vision of supporting the economic development of the region has not changed, Raji said Odu’a was better positioned at inception than now but said his team and the Board were initiating activities to strengthen the company and widen its operations to make it arrive in the global stage as a major player soon.

To accomplish this, he said the company would sustain its efforts to develop the capabilities of its people and create more job opportunities to help the company explore opportunities in the various sectors of the economy.

All these, he said, were aimed at reinvigourating Odu’a as a global conglomerate, adding that the vision would easily explain what steps need to be taken to enable the company become a global player.

The three military governors of the old Oyo, Ondo and Ogun states who, rather than share or sell the assets, chose to incorporate the investments of the defunct Western State into a conglomerate named Odu’a Investments Limited in October, 1976, will be honoured at the event.
