In the recent times, the Nobel Laureate said he will tear his green card if the USA Republican Candidate, Donald John Trump emerges as the President of The United States [POTUS] but lo and behold, the American billionaire won in a keenly-contested poll against Hilary Rhodam Clinton of Democrats.
Donald Trump: Haba Professor Wole Soyinka!
By Adelowo Oguntola
I have always admired Professor Akinwande Oluwole “Wole” Soyinka’s literary works – He is indeed an outstanding grand scholar par excellence. While growing up, my Dad always give me his scholarly works to read. Some of them I read while growing up include – The Lion and the Jewel, The Man Died, The Interpreters and Ake. So I revere and respect him greatly.
Our own Nobel Laureate was under intense criticism to immediately tear his green card but he has declared that he will tear it on January 20, 2017, the inauguration date of 45th POTUS.
To my utter befuddlement, he has promised to hold funeral on Trump’s inauguration. The question is, why is Wole Soyinka so concerned about happenings in America and not in his own country? Is he that bored?
The octogenarian is bothered about Donald Trump emerging as the President of the World’s Super Power nation but he is not concerned about the unfortunate inflationary environment which suggests that our economy is at a crossroads and needs urgent measures to arrest its drift, the high cost of essential food items, the depreciating value of the naira against major foreign currencies, the outrageous amount of money being spent by politicians, the poor state of our road which is a “treacherous long stretch”, the comatose healthcare services, the power outage being experienced in most places and many other plights associated with his country. Wole Soyinka is sleeping!
This is not Wole Soyinka that took an active role in Nigeria’s political history and its struggle for independence from Great Britain and fought against imperialism.
This is not Wole Soyinka that seized the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service studio in 1965 and broadcast a demand for the cancellation of the Western Nigeria Regional Elections after the election was massively rigged with the help of Northern oligarchs.
This is not Wole Soyinka that was arrested by the Federal Government of General Yakubu Gowon in 1967 during Nigeria civil war and put in solitary confinement for two years.
This is not Wole Soyinka that escaped from Nigeria on a motorcycle via the “NADECO Route.” during the dark days of the dark-googled military dictator, General Sani Abacha. Abacha later proclaimed a death sentence against him “in absentia.”
Prof should leave US for the real owners; let us revamp the country together. We must keep this government on its toes to fulfil their electoral promises.
