Taraba SUBEB Chairman advocates re-introduction of teachers colleges

Mr Yakubu Agbaizo, the Chairman, Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), on Saturday, called for reintroduction of teachers colleges (TC) in the nation’s education system to enhance teaching and learning.

Agbaizo made the call in an interview with Blackface News in Jalingo.

The chairman said teachers’ colleges were the best training institutions to train people who intended to become teachers in life.
“I want to call on relevant government ministries and agencies to consider the reintroduction of teachers colleges in order to restore the lost glory of the nation’s education system.
“As a teacher who passed through teachers college in the good old days in the country, I can tell you that TCs were and are still best training institutions for teachers.
“Apart from practical teaching classes that were included in the curriculum, the colleges enabled the nation then to have people who truly wanted to be teachers in the system, unlike now when people take up teaching appointments because they couldn’t find jobs elsewhere.”
Agbaizo decried a situation where the education system which started on sound footing at independence due to the existence of standard teachers colleges to give fundamental training to the would-be teachers had gone bad.
He urged government at all levels to give priority to teachers welfare to enable them to perform maximally for the good of the society.
