Importing substandard products is corruption, says SON coordinator

The Osun Coordinator of Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mr Sunday Badewole, on Monday said the importation of substandard goods into the country was an integral part of corruption that must be dealt with.

Badewole said this  while speaking with newsmen  in Osogbo the state capital.  “Importing substandard goods into the country is a very strong part of corruption.

” By importing substandard goods,  it means you want to defraud people and when you defraud people of their money, it is part of corruption.

“It is stealing with style and it must be eradicated in our society”.

Badewole who decried influx substandard products into the country through the porous borders, said the organisation would not relent on the enforcement of standards and standardisation of products in the markets.

He said the organisation was planning a public enlightenment workshop for importers and consumers  on the need to avoid buying and selling of fake products in the market.

Badewole also said the organisation was collaborating with the state government on the formation of ‘standards club’ in primary and secondary schools.

He said the club would be used to engage and educate youths on the ethic, value and virtue of standards in product.

Badewole said when youths are been taught on the importance of standards from childhood, it would assist them when they grow up on the danger of importing substandard goods.

” The real change must begin with the young ones and that is why we are taking the campaign  on standard and standardisation to schools”.
