Confusion, uncertainty trail PDP national convention in Port Harcourt

*Police seal off venue

*Court suspends convention till September

*Party shelves convention indefinitely

The planned National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed to hold on Wednesday as amidst confusion and uncertainty over whether delegates would eventually convoke to elect party officials.

While the leadership of the party has ordered that the convention earlier scheduled to hold on Wednesday has been postponed indefinitely, national executive council (NEC) has extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Committee by a year.

The decision was taken inside the Rivers State Government House, when leaders of the party, especially members of the national working committee of the party had gathered to appraise the development occasioned by police blockage of the venue of the planned convention.

This is coming as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja presided by Justice Okon Abang has granted an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the party from conducting its convention until September 7.

In the suit filed by a factional chairman of the party, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, the court ordered the party not to sponsor any candidate to be elected into any of its national offices, pending the determination of the suit that was filed by the Sheriff-led faction of the party.

Justice Abang, who vowed to jail anyone that disobeys his orders, restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from monitoring the convention of the party till its leadership crisis has been resolved.

He further directed the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to enforce the orders until all the applications pending in the suit are disposed of.

Prior to that, combined force of security operatives comprising of personnel drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, the Directorate of State Security Service had cordoned off Sharks International Stadium, venue of the convention planned by the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the party.

Human and vehicular movements had been prevented into the arena with heavily armed security men and equipment securing the edifice.

This however prompted the NWC of the party to meet at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt where a decision was reached to elongate the tenure of the caretaker committee by additional one year.
