Benue market women protest multiple taxation

Women in various trade and markets unions in Benue State have protested against what they termed multiple taxation imposed on them by the state government.

The protesting women took their grievances to the two tomato markets in Tarka and Ushongo local government areas of the state with a call on government to reverse the tax regime in the interest of the people.

In Tarka Local Government Area, the popular Tarhembe market was closed down by protesting market women and traders who also went ahead to block the Makurdi – Gboko federal Highway to protest the multiple taxation.

Their action caused traffic gridlock that lasted for almost four hours as travelers who were cut unaware stayed in a spot for several hours that the protest lasted.

In Lessel Market Ushongo Local Government, the traders blocked the highway in the area and made bonfire which caused a huge smoke into the sky.

There was no movement of vehicles for hours as stranded passengers lined up at both end of the federal highway which led to Ogoja in cross River state was blocked.
