Hijab: Catholic bishop flays Osun CAN, says Aregbesola ‘a friend of the church’

By Akeeb Alarape, Osogbo

The Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan, Most Reverend Gabriel Lake Abegunrin on has faulted the Osun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over his posture of the lingering issue of judicial pronouncement allowing Muslim female students to wear Hijab to public schools.
Speaking when he led a delegation comprising of the African representative of the pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis Benedict, Augustine Kasujja he lauded the governor for ensuring religious harmony in the state.

The two were in Osogbo, the state capital to witness the ordination of the new Bishop of Osogbo Diocese.

Addressing his host, Abegunrin said, “We are happy to be here, to start our journey of the new Bishop from your own seat. We’re just coming straight from Ibadan.

“I have to let everybody know that you are a great supporter of our Church: in the sense that this Government is very friendly with the Church. And we have not had any face-off since he resumed office. It has always been cordial. We dialogue a lot.”

While suing for continuous engagement of the state chapter of CAN, he stated that “When things are bad we dialogue. When we have challenges we dialogue. And when there praise worthy things we dialogue and praise the Lord for it. So it’s a very cordial government to the Church, and we hope we shall maintain it.

“We do thus because we intend to represent the Church- the Universal Church the proper way. As much as my Bishop brothers and Priests know, we have no room for violence. We could dialogue for years to achieve what we want to achieve but no room for violence.

“That is why it appears, there was so much dust being raised we tried to keep our members down. We say no violence. We shall meet our Governor for dialogue. And thank you. You have always given us the opportunity to dialogue with you.”
