The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) on TuesdayÂ recorded zero Mega Watts in the nationâ€™s spinning reserve.Â
According to experts, the situation has thus made the countryâ€™s national grid unstable for transmission and distribution to consumers.Â
The implication according to industry watchers is that the nation evacuated all that it generated just as it also exhausted its reserves to meet up with energy requirements.Â
A source within the industry told newsmen that “Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â There was zero MW spinning reserve on Tuesday, and it made the grid extremely unstable. It was a difficult decision to take but there was no point building up a back-up when there was no energy to send out.”Â
The daily summary of system performance from NESI obtained by BLACKFACE revealed that on Monday, the electricity market lowest generation was 2,482.90MW while it sent out an average of 2,530MW.Â
A breakdown of the situation was given thus, that the market lost 3,667MW to gas constraint, 136MW to management constraint and 380MW to water management constraint, which culminated in a financial loss of N2, 008, 000, 000.Â
The daily summary said, “On May 30 2016, average energy sent out was 2530MWh/hour (up by 552Mwh/h), The reported gas constraint was 3,667MW. The reported line constraint was 136MW. The water management constraint was 380MW.
Spinning Reserve is the difference between the total generated energy and what Nigerian Electricity system Operator the energy sends out to the electricity distribution companies (DisCos).Â
A top source within the industry stated that “Well, because of issues relating to gas supply because it is also gas that powers the spinning reserve, because of financial liquidity in the market.Â
“Not everybody that has promised to do spinning reserve is being paid for the ancillary service. Today (Monday), it was 9.8MW, it was 38MW on 28 of May and 10MW yesterday (Sunday).Â
“But right now you cannot say if payment is the problem because we are not sending out enough energy owing to gas problem. So it is now difficult to keep some for spinning reserve. And you know that the spinning reserve serves to keep the grid stable.”
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is presently capable of transmitting between 5,500MW and 6,000MW.
