Lagos Assembly tasks executive on flooding

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have called on relevant ministries and agencies to take steps to guard against flooding as raining season becomes intense in the state.

 The call followed a motion moved by the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, Mr. Segun Olulade in response to the incidence of flood that sacked Poka and Imokin villages in Eredo, Epe. 

Entertaining the motion, the House said the Ministry of Environment needed to redouble its efforts at ensuring functional and free flow of water across the state as well as carrying out palliative measures in villages already affected by flood. 

The lawmakers also urged the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to ensure that all building constructions comply with the approved design. 

The House also advised the Ministry of Information and Strategy to continue sensitising the public on the danger of blocking the drains with indiscriminate disposal of refuse. 

Explaining the motion, Olulade, who said that residents should desist from habit of throwing refuse into carnal, noted that two communities at Epe Local Government had been sacked by flood. 

“This is not far from building on waterways and illegal disposal of wastes. 

“It is important for all relevant agencies to enforce all regulations to ensure protection of lives and property during this raining season,” Olulade said. 

Also speaking, Hon. Dayo Saka-Fafunmi, the Chairman, House Committee on Environment said that relevant agencies needed to visit the affected areas. 

The Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa  said that the government should not relent in sensitising the residents on the repercussion of blocking waterways with wastes and illegal building. 

Obasa said that all relevant agencies needed to do the needful to avoid any unnecessary losses through flood. 

The House directed the Clerk of the House, Mr Ganiyu Abiru to write a letter to the affected ministries to take action.
