No fewer than three cases of Lassa fever have been recorded in Kano State since December 14 to date.

This is coming just as the death toll arising from the disease has been put at two.

Efforts of the Kano State Government to confront the scourge have been boosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) who has donated drugs and equipments to the state government.

Briefing newsmen in Kano on Monday in Kano, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso said that the outbreak was in Garun Mallam and Dawakin Kudu Local Government Areas of the state.

He stated that at present, two suspects are on admission at the Isolation and treatment centre in Yargawa, adding that the state recorded the third case involving a young business man from Dawakin Kudu Local Government who travelled from Benue state to the state.

“Since the beginning of this outbreak to date, the state recorded three confirmed cases in two Local Governments, all contacts were identified and followed up and more than 70 percent have either completed their 21 days follow-up or drugged due to negative results.”

According to him, Kano state government has equipped and operationalized the Yargawa Isolation and Treatment centre for treatment of cases by providing Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) and other necessary materials and adequate logistics for the management and control of this outbreak.

“To further curb the disease, he said the state government has conducted sensitization meetings with several categories of health workers such as Private Practitioners, Chief Medical Directors, Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and other stakeholders, adding that personnel at the Isolation and Treatment centre have been properly trained.

The Commissioner, however, lauded Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for his personal support and commitment on the on-going war against LASSA Fever, “without which we may not record the successes achieved in bringing this outbreak under control.
