INEC appoints new REC for Anambra Central re-run poll

By Obinna Achi, Awka

The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) in Anambra State has received a new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) posted to it by the national headquarters.

The new commissioner is Dr. Lawrence Azubuike who replaced Edwin Nwatarali, an engineer, who left the state after the general election in 2015.

With the new REC, INEC has restated its desire to ensure that the forthcoming poll scheduled to take place onMarch 5th, 2016 would feature all those who took part in the March 28th, 2015 election except the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

However in a statement On Tuesday by the commission, signed by the new REC, Dr. Azubuike, did not specify whether the All Progressive Congress (APC) would participate during the election.

Before now, it was speculated that APC would not partake in the election with PDP having allegedly disqualified by INEC.

Already, INEC had scheduled what it called stakeholders meeting tomorrow (Thursday) at its headquarters in Awka to clarify on the matter.

According to the Statement yesterday by INEC, “The Commission also decided that pursuant to the said judgment only the political parties and candidates who participated in the 28th March 2015 senatorial election in Anambra central Senatorial District, excluding the Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, will participate in the re-run election.”

“Following from this, INEC, Anambra State, pursuant to the decision and directive of the Commission reiterates and restates that no candidate who did not contest the 28th March 2015 senatorial election in Anambra Central Senatorial District is eligible to contest the 5th March 2016 re-run election.”

“Further, all duly registered voters are enjoined to go and cast their votes at the designated polling units where they were registered on the aforementioned date.”

“In its resolve to ensure a credible election, the Commission shall strictly apply all the provisions of all relevant laws governing the election. Consequently, all parties, their candidates and supporters are required to adhere strictly to all laws, regulations and guidelines regulating the process” INEC said.
