Ekwueme hale, hearty and recovering, says family source

A source close to the family of nation’s first elected Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme has debunked news reports suggesting that the elder statesman has passed on, rather, the source maintained that he is still alive and well.

The source who spoke to our correspondent in a telephone chat also stated that the former leader is still receiving treatment within the country though he refused to state the location where the octogenarian is currently located.

The media (both conventional and social media) has been trending with the news of the demise of Ekwueme since early Tuesday money, a development the source who pleaded not to be mentioned stated that the information is not true.

“Papa Ekwueme is alive and doing much better. He had breakfast this morning (Tuesday 7th November, 2017),” the source said.

The 85 years old former leader had collapsed in his Enugu residence two weeks ago and was admitted at the Neurosurgery section of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Memphys Hospital in Enugu.

News of his ill-health was broken by his younger brother, Professor Laz Ekwueme who spoke for the family.

“Dr Alex I. Ekwueme, GCON, was on Sunday 29th October 2017, admitted into hospital for a chest infection.

“It will be recalled that the former Vice President had a quiet celebration of his 85th birthday on the 21st of October 2017 in the company of his family members and he remained in high spirits up till his recent health challenge.” He stated.

Dr Ekwueme was elected and functioned as the Vice President of the country between 1979 and 1983 during the regime of former President Shehu Shagari.
