Court remands two in prison over alleged robbery in Benue

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital on Friday remanded two men, Lawrence  Abalike and Christopher Idoko in prison.

They were remanded over alleged armed robbery and theft of goods from a shop.

The accused who both hail from Ogene Ameji/Ogbokolo town in Okpokwu Local Government Area are facing a two-count charge of armed robbery and criminal conspiracy.

The plea of the accused was not taken and Magistrate Franca Yuwa remanded them in Makurdi Prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.

They were arrested by the police on July 18, according to the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Owochio Adama.

He told the court that the case was reported by the complainants Mr Emmanuel Aver and his wife, Mary, of Aduda Ameji Village.

Adama said the complainants were attacked at their provision store by the accused persons, who were armed with cutlasses.

“They took away creams, different types of soap, soft drinks, a mobile phone and N11, 500 and also injured Aver.

“When the accused persons were arrested some provisions and the sum of N320 were recovered from them.”

The offences contravened Sections 1 (1), (2) and  6 (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (special provisions) Act 2004, Laws of Benue.

The case has been adjourned until Sept. 22 for mention.
