Tension as Saraki moves to reshuffle Senate committees

There appears to be tension and apprehension amongst members as Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki is set to reshuffle standing committees of the upper legislative chamber.

At plenary on Thursday, Saraki said that the committee clean up would be carried out before Senate goes on recess on July 26, 2017.

Currently, the Senate has 69 standing committees with Saraki as Chairman, Selection Committee.

The announcement followed observations by Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu that senators appeared to cluster in some committees making it difficult for them to attend sessions of other committees.

He said that out of 21 members of the Tertiary Education and TETFUND committee, only 12 signed the report of Federal University of Maritime Studies, Oron Bill, 2017 which the Senate considered.

He said that it is unhealthy for senators to belong to many committees that would not allow them to participate in committee legislative works.

Saraki who agreed with Ekweremadu said that something would be done to “clean up” the committees.

He said, “I agree with the DSP. We are going to clean up the committees before we go on recess. We have discussed this at the leadership level and wee are going to do something about it to ensure that the right thing is done.”

Findings showed that while the official number of senators to belong to a committee is pegged at 11,for some reasons, the Tertiary Education and TETFUND Committee has 21 members.

Some senators are said to have smuggled themselves into some juicy committee apparently for pecuniary interests.
