Court summons Odigie-Oyegun, APC chair, secretary for contempt

A state High Court sitting in Abakaliki has summoned the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and National Secretary, Mallam Mai Mala Buni to appear before it in person on 28 of September to face alleged contempt of charge.

Both of them are to personally appear before the court to answer questions on why they should not be committed to prison for disobeying an order of interlocutory injunction restraining them from effecting a change in the leadership of the party in the state by electing new executives of the party in Ebonyi state.

The crisis in the state chapter of the party allegedly started when the Odigie-Oyegun transmitted a letter to the state Deputy Chairman, Eze Nwachukwu to act as chairman of the party.

He was subsequently taken to court by the chairman who was suspended but the court had on November restrained the respondent from appointing caretaker committee in place of the executives elected during the ward, Local government and state congresses conducted in the state on November 11, 16 and 29 respectively pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The APC National Chairman and National Secretary had earlier been served Form 48 which is the notice of consequence of disobedience to court order that may commit the duo to prison if they flouted the orders of court.

But the duo went ahead to issue Nwachukwu a letter appointing him as Interim Chairman of the party in state in total disregard to the court’s directive.

This forced counsel to the Applicants Godwin Onwusi to apply to the Court for Order of committal to prison (Form 49) for the respondents to appear before the court and explain why they should not be committed for prison for contempt.

Counsel to the Respondents, Ikechukwu Ezechukwu, (SAN) said he asked for the September date to enable him ensure that the duo are in court to respond to the summons personally
