Late Maitama Sule, an iconic nationalist – Sen. Wamakko

Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto North) has described the late Dan Masanin Kano, Alhaji Maitama Sule, as an “iconic nationalist” who lived his life with utmost love for Nigeria.

Wamakko said this in a condolence message signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Bashir Mani, and issued to newsmen in Sokoto on Wednesday.

”The late Dan Masanin Kano was a foremost elder statesman, frontline nationalist, astute educationist, outstanding Diplomat and an upright politician.

”As a presidential aspirant of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN), the late Maitama Sule exhibited a high sense of decorum and humility when he lost to the second republic President, Shehu Shagari in the party’s primaries.

” As the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, the deceased worked relentlessly to shore up the image of the country, as well as bolster world’s peace and unity.

”As an educationist, he had mentored myriad of leaders for Nigeria in various aspects of human endeavour,” the lawmaker said.

He also paid glowing tribute to the late sage, extolling his invaluable contributions to national development and cohesion.

Wamakko recalled the immense contributions of the late national Orator when he worked with the founding Fathers of Nigeria such as the late Premier of the defunct Northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the late President of Nigeria, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the late Premier of the defunct Western region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the late Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa.

He then extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late patriot, the Government and people of Kano State, as well as the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Wamakko, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, prayed God for the repose the soul of the deceased and grant Nigerians the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

The late Dan Masani died on Monday at a Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, during a brief illness.

He was aged 87 years, and was buried on Tuesday at the Kofar Mazugal graveyard in Kano metropolis.
