Lagos Assembly Move To Resuscitated Teaching Of History In Lagos Schools

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have moved the motion to resuscitate the teachings of history as a course or subject in schools and institutions of higher learning in the State.

Hon. Wahab Jimoh representing Apapa Constituency II moved the motion under Matters of Urgent Public Importance. He stated that the teaching and learning of history in all schools would greatly enrich the understanding of students on nation building, patriotism, selflessness and enhance their knowledge about the country’s heritage and value

Hon. Wahab expressed his concern that there has been a decline in the teaching and learning of history as a course or subject in schools and institutions of higher learning in the State which could consequently put the giant strides and sacrifices of our founding fathers, including the historical events that are already documented by various
writers and authors in vain.

Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuoso while contributing said it is important for students in schools to have the in-depth knowledge of the History and Background of their own country. Adding that we cannot appreciate what our past leaders have done if we lack the History of Nigeria.

Hon. Rotimi Olowo representing Somolu I while commending the motion stated that it is imperative to study and understand the evolution of the creation of Nigeria. ‘’All Economic decisions, Social decisions and Political decisions
are based in the study of History and if studied accurately it wouldenable student appreciate the different ethnic groups we have inNigeria’’.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa emphasized that the teaching of History in Lagos State Schools will empower students to be self-reliant and there is need to look inward to compile the historyof our past heroes for it to be taught in our schools.

To this end, the House however called on the Governor of Lagos State Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to direct the Deputy Governor and the Ministry of Education to mandate the Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and other relevant Agencies to devise strategies thatwould enhance the teaching and learning of History in Lagos State  and mandate the Ministry of Education to brief the House Committee on Education on the proposed strategies before their implementation in Primary and Secondary Schools before the next academic session in the
