Joy as Ondo gets Breast Cancer Treatment Centre

Ondo state government has approved the establishment of Breast Cancer Treatment Centre to assist women affected by the deadly disease.

At the launch of the state chapter of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) in Akure, the state capital on Tuesday, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu promised that his administration would prevent untimely deaths among breast cancer patients in the state.

BRECAN founder, who is the wife of the governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu urged the state governors across the country to allocate funds in their annual budgets through the Ministry of Health to prevent breast cancer.

Mrs Akeredolu pointed out that the timely awareness and regular breasts check would prevent the disease among women.

She noted that breast cancer was more rampant among ladies between the ages of 18 and 20, urging women above 40 years to go for regular check-up.

According to her, women needed proper sensitization and awareness on the control of the disease which she said prompted the formation of the association.

She pointed out that treatment of the disease was no longer expensive, especially in the early stage, but lamented that many hospitals in the country lack specialists to handle the disease, while facilities for the its treatment were inadequate in hospitals across the country.

The National President of the Association, Mrs Juliet Ogbuogu urged the state governor to use his offices to sensitize the state assembly on the need to make legislation on the control of Breast Cancer in the state.
