Tension as Appeal Court fixes date for hearing on Akungba-Akoko Kingship tussle

By Maxwell Adeleye

The Agure-Mokun lineage of Ole ruling house in Akungba-Akoko,Ondo state has approached the Court of Appeal, Akure, challenging the appointment of Oba Sunday Ajimoh as the traditional ruler of the town.

It argued that his appointment was not in conformity with the norms and tradition of the town.

The family also asked the court to set aside the selection, appointment and installation of Oba Ajimoh as it was not the turn of his family to produce the Alale of Akungba-Akoko, insisting that Prince Isiaka Adu was the choice of the family and the kingmakers for the stool.

Counsel to the family, Gani Ashiru in his submission before the court noted that an Ondo State High Court sitting in Ikare-Akoko had earlier ruled that Prince Isiaka Adu be installed the Alale of Akungba-Akoko.

He said the ruling was later appealed and Ajimoh was installed the new Alale of Akungba while the Appeal was still pending.

Ashiru stated further that the immediate past administration of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko approved the appointment of Ajimoh as the traditional ruler of the town towards the end of his administration.

He said the installation of Oba Ajimoh has caused serious crisis in the town and urged the court to give accelerated hearing to the matter to avoid further crisis in the town.

The counsel said the people of the town are anxious of the ruling of the Court of Appeal on the matter, and therefore appealed to the court to ensure that it ensures speedy dispensation of justice on the matter.

Also, counsel to the monarch, Soji Adedoyin urged the court to give accelerated hearing to the matter for peace to reign in the community.

The panel of Judges including Justices Muhammed Danjuma and James Sheu Ariyibi thereafter fixed June 29, for hearing on the appeal.
