Professor Adewole stated this at an elaborate luncheon organised by Justice Olayinka Ayoola JSC rtd in honour of the minister in Ibadan.
Health Minister advises fellow ministers against been at war with host state govs
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole has advised fellow ministers against been at war with their states’ governors as hostility between governors and ministers could stifle socio economic development in the states.
According to him, quite a number of states have failed to developed due to the fact that serving federal ministers and state governors were at war with themselves.
Among those present at the event included members of the bar and bench, politicians, academics and Ilesa socio cultural groups.
The Health Minister who was elated by the honour said there was no sound reason for serving federal ministers and host governors to be at loggerhead over irrelevant issues.
While he called for cordial working relations among ministers and their host governors, Professor Adewole cited Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his humble self as example worthy of emulation.
His words “My governor and my humble self, I can say without mincing words that we enjoy good working relations. We see ourselves working together to bring development to our people. I often go to my governor to ask for one thing or the other to bring health care delivery to our people. And in some cases, he (governor Aregbesola) will call me , saying look why can’t we do this to help develop the state. So, I think that is the most ideal thing to do to lift the standard of living and ensure we bring social amenities and all that could make our people happy.”
The minister also used the opportunity to inform the people about the activities of his ministry in the last one and half years, saying that about 3000 Primary Health Centres would be delivered this year across the country .
According to him, out of the 30,000 PHCs in Nigeria, the government is targeting 10,000 to bring quality healthcare delivery nearer to the people.
In his words, “This government is people centred, and our objective is purposely driven by the consciousness of the general well being of Nigerians, we are committed towards healthy living for all irrespective of tribe, religion or status: reducing mortality rate of all curable disease to the lowest percentage ever. In the last two years of this administration we have strived to improve and promote our health infrastructures by all standards”
He explained that even though the government would build new PHCs,” what we are saying is that if 10,000 of the 30,000 PHCs can work ,we are fine.
“So, our job is to make the 10,000 work. In Osun, the governor told me he has enough. So, we do not need to build any new ones all we need to do is clear the place, make sure there is water and electricity ,put people there and put drugs. That is all.
“So, you may not notice it. What we are doing is going to be in phases. 10,000 is our target but where are we today, through the support of British government, we are funding 995 in six states of the North. We have just signed a new agreement with the European Union they will do 774. On our own, we are funding 110 in 2016, this year we will fund 500 and the wife of the Senate President has received support from Access Bank. Access Bank said they will do one per state that is 36. So, we keep on adding together to it.
“We have already awarded contract for three per state in the South West and that is for 2016. In 2017 you will see more.”
In his welcome address, Justice Olayinka Ayoola who was the Chairman of the occasion described the Minister as an epitome of hard work, humility and decency.
He said the people of Ilesa, Osun state were proud of him because of the fact that he has held high positions of authority with excellent results.
