Over 30 Football Fans Dies At Calabar Viewing Centre

Over 30 people have lost their lives at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River state capital, after being electrocuted by a high tension cable that reportedly fell on the roof of the building.

According to Reports, the football fans were said to have assembled at the viewing centre to watch a UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht on satellite television, a game which the host won 2-1 (3-2) on aggregate to advance to the semi-final.

 

 

 

It was also reported that a transformer near the viewing centre located in the Iyang-Esu area of the Calabar Municipal local government area exploded during the match and this caused the high-tension cable to drop on the viewing centre therefore, victims died as a result of a contact between the live cable and the roof of the viewing centre.

An electricity authority has affirmed it is illegal to erect any building around areas with high tension cables.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River state Command, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident and said the number of casualties would be confirmed today, Friday, April 21.
