PDP failed due to lack of internal democracy, imposition, says Ekwueme

By Wahab Akanji, Abuja

A former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme has stated that the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 Presidential Election was due to lack of internal democracy within the party.

Ekwueme, who spoke while receiving members of the Strategy Review Committee of the party who visited him to present a copy of the final report of the committee, also identified impunity and imposition of candidates as some of the causes of the downfall of the party in the last general election.

He advised members of the committee to reconcile with aggrieved members of the party especially those who left for other political parties in order to find lasting solution to the party’s problems.

He regretted that the vision with which the party was founded suddenly disappeared along the lines.

“With that vision, the party was able to control 28 out of the 36 states of the federation, ” the former Vice-president recalled.

He promised the delegation that visited him that he would make a further statement after studying the copy of the committee ‘s report.

The leader of the delegation, Ambassador Aminu Wali noted that that there were impunity that made them to loose the election to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

He disclosed that his committee was saddled with the responsibility of reviewing all aspects of the party to determine areas where changes needed to be done.

Aminu, who addressed journalists at the end of the committee’s meeting with the former vice president, expressed optimism that the party would re-brand to go back to the visions of the founding fathers of the party, saying that the party belongs to all Nigerians.

He insisted that the PDP was already a mega party, whose presence is noticeable in every ward and village in Nigeria, pointing out that people of Nigeria were already yearning for the party.

Also speaking, a member of the delegation and founder of DAAR Communication, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said that PDP was meant for everybody.

He apologized to Nigerians on the areas they failed to meet their expectations, declaring that PDP was now a born again party poised to win the 2019 general election.

He explained that PDP is one solid party, insisting that there is “ no faction in PDP. What we have is few dissidents”..

He further noted that all the senators, governors are with the caretaker committee led Ahmed Makarafi.

In the delegation were also former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dubem Onyia and former Aviation minister, Fidelia Njeze.
