We’ll not allow Wike to destroy Rivers dignity, says Peterside

By Tom Amakri, Port Harcourt

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has berated Governor Nyesom Wike for engaging in needless controversies.

Specifically, Peterside accused Wike of trying to corrupt federal institutions and its officials.

He declared that Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not be allowed to destroy Rivers dignity.

Peterside, who is also the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), stated these yesterday at the Port Harcourt International Airport, in an interactive session with reporters.

He noted that the outcome of Nigeria police investigation linking Rivers governor to the N111.3 million bribe money recovered from 23 electoral officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the December 10 last year’s bloody legislative rerun in Rivers state was one too many for a governor that had been linked to everything but good.

Peterside, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also stated that Wike was involved in alleged bribery of former Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Rivers state, Dame Gesila Khan, attempts to induce some high-ranking judicial officers and compromise of security officers, among others.

He expressed displeasure that the Rivers governor was rubbishing the hard-earned reputation of Rivers people, known to be industrious, responsible, decent and dignified.

The NIMASA boss said: “The latest embarrassment from the Rivers governor is indeed shocking. Here is a man who has been boasting that his party can win elections. If this is true, why was he so desperate to the point of inducing electoral officials to do his bidding with our commonwealth?

“I have always said it that if free and fair election is allowed to take place in Rivers State, the APC will win convincingly. We have the people behind us and they know who can best represent their hopes and aspirations.

“Rather than the Rivers governor and his cohorts to avail themselves the opportunity of defending allegations against them, Wike ran to court in Abuja, desperately seeking to stop the panel by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris. If he has nothing to hide, why didn’t he tell his boys to appear before the panel, if only to prove their innocence?

“The same governor has now set up a kangaroo panel in Rivers State to look at issues surrounding the same December 10 rerun elections and he expects people to turn up. What manner of a man would reason this way? Can’t he just rise above primordial sentiments and behave like a statesman?”

Peterside, the governorship candidate of the APC in Rivers state during the 2015 election, who is a former member of the House of Representatives, also that he would continue to speak up on the failings of the Wike-led administration, stressing that the collective will and aspirations of Rivers people would never be jettisoned through negligence and incompetence.

The NIMASA boss urged the IGP to prosecute the persons involved in the bribery scandal to serve as a deterrent to others, while calling on Rivers people not to lose hope, but continue to pray for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in the steady progress to turn the fortunes of the country around, after many years of decay.
