Police avert clash by members over speakership tussle, seal Ondo Assembly

By Samuel Faleye, Akure

The crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly on Monday morning took a turn for the worse as men of the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force sealed up the Assembly premises to avert clash by members over the crisis of leadership rocking the assembly.

The move, which occurred on Monday was carried out to prevent a fracas which would have occurred at the Assembly premises between the two factions who are laying claim to the speakership seat.

The factions are led by of who was reportedly elected by members, Hon. Malachi Coker and the speaker who was said to have been been removed from office, Hon. Jumoke Akindele

Coker’s faction impeached Akindele as the speaker last Friday evening but she insisted that she remained in her position because her removal does not meet the constitutional requirement.

The legislators, who are in Coker’s camp were able to gain entrance to the Assembly premises as early as 6 a.m on Monday but Coker immediately sat on the seat of speaker in order to commence their sitting.

When hinted about the issue, Akindele’s faction quickly stormed the Assembly and the embattled speaker personally challenged Coker that he has no right to sit on the seat of the speaker.

But Coker was said to have replied her that she is no longer their speaker because she had been impeached.

This brought in an altercation between the two factions.

A team of policemen led by the State Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, who were already at the Assembly premises to prevent break down of law, stormed the hallow chamber and ordered the lawmakers including the workers to leave the Assembly immediately.
