Atiku says education, potent weapon for human capital development

By Moses Johnson, Jalingo

A former Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has stated that educational development is the most important aspect of human development.

He spoke in Jalingo –the Taraba state capital at the inauguration of the first privately owned tertiary institution in the northern part of the country, Peacock College of Education.

Atiku said most of the advanced countries of the world attained their status through knowledge, not through acquisition of natural resources.

“Today, there are a lot of countries in the world that are developed, not because they have any natural resources but because they have developed their human resources,” he said.

Atiku said the take–off of Peacock as a college rather than a university did not in any way mean they have started in a “small way”.

“You didn’t start in a small way. I started Abti University, Yola, 20 years ago as a nursery school, later to a primary school, then secondary school and to a university as it is today. Therefore, I am optimistic that you will grow to a university in no distance future,” he said.

Atiku added that the existence of the pioneer ICT based College of Education in the northeast in the state is a milestone in the educational development of Taraba state and the northern region.

Minister for Education Mallam Adamu Adamu said the ministry will continue to support the 84 Colleges of Education in the country including Peacock. Adamu was represented by Prof. Baffa Aliyu who noted that investment in education is a selfless service to humanity, not a “money spinner”.

He urged the college to ensure it adhere strictly to the guidelines of the National Commission for Colleges of Education to avoid sanction.

Co-proprietor of the college, Sen. Abdullaziz Ibrahim, said Peacock College of Education is established to compliment other higher institutions in the state.

Ibrahim listed objectives of the college to include provision of qualified ICT compliant primary and secondary school teachers and offer of learning opportunities to married women, among others.
