Lawyer urges Ondo Assembly to spun new bills as Mimiko exit imminent

By Samuel Faleye, Akure

An Akure based human rights activist,Tolu Babaleye has urged members of the Ondo state House of Assembly to reject the 38 new bills sent to the parliament for passage by Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

A letter sent to the Speaker of the Assembly, Princess Jumoke Akande by Babaleye who is an indigene of the state urged the Assembly to consider the timing and implication of these bills at the wee hour of the present regime.

The present administration will terminate on February 23,and to ensure seamless transition, various Committees have been set to work out the modalities.

Babaleye alleged that in order to prevent hostility from Mimiko, the governor-elect visited him in his office and eulogised him to the chagrin of the people.

The Akoko- born lawyer said the state government allegedly transmuted the 38 bills to the Assembly for processing and passage into Law.

According to him,“from my investigation, the proposed Laws, contained Life Pension act,Law to forbid anyone or any authority from inquiring into anything done or purportedly to have been done by the present government, law on Adekunle Ajasin University(AAU)Akungba- Akoko and law on OSOPADEC to completely free from answering any queries on OSOPADEC funds among others.

Babaleye recalled that over 60 workers of AAUA were sacked illegally by its former Vice Chancellor(VC)Prof. Femi Mimiko immediately after the 2012 election on the allegation that they worked for the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN).

He noted that Akeredolu had promised to reabsorb these people when he assumes office, stressing that the present governmen is now making moves to block the gesture through one of the proposed 38 bills.

The legal practitioner appealed to the State Assembly to identify with the People by disallowing the state government to use its members to plunder the state, using the instrumentality of the Law through the ‘mischievous’new bills sent a month to its exit.`
