Benue denies conceding land to Fulani for grazing, says deputy governor

By Tersee Akaar, Makurdi

Benue State Government has denied ceding any part of Agatu Local Government area to Fulani herdsmen from Nasarawa state for the purpose of grazing.

Speaking to newsmen in Makurdi, the Deputy Governor, Engr Benson Abounu described as untrue the allegation making rounds on the social media that the State government has ceded part of Agatu land to Fulani herdsmen.

He stated that, at no time did the Benue state government cede any part of Agatu land to anybody or group of people, adding that Governor Samuel Ortom has consistently said at every forum that Benue state would never cede any part of its land to anybody, no matter whom.

Engr Abounu explained that the joint Benue/Nasarawa state Security Council meeting which held in Agatu and Makurdi only deliberated on the best possible ways of of maintaining enduring peace in the conflict area; bringing together the two parties.

“The joint Benue/Nasarawa state Security Council meeting did not cede any part of Agatu land to Fulani herdsmen. It merely deliberated on the best possible ways of maintaining enduring peace in the conflict area; bringing together the two parties.”

“The allegation, therefore, that the government has sold a part of Agatu land to Fulani herdsmen is totally untrue. It is wicked, malicious, mischievous and most unfortunate. Governor Ortom has never contemplated such an action and he would never do that”.

The deputy governor who absolved the Sole Administrator, Agatu local government Council, Hon. Mike Inalegwu of any involvement in the alleged sale of a portion of Agatu land explained that no such sale ever took place.

He asserted that the peace treaty contained in the communiqué issued after the joint State Security Council meeting was a mutual agreement between the Agatu and Fulani people, adding that it was not forced on the Agatu people as is been portrayed by some political detractors.
