LASIEC to phase out obsolete ballot boxes

   By Wasiu Popoola

The Chairman, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission ( LASIEC ), Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips, has revealed that the Commission would soon replace its obsolete ballot boxes used for the conduct of  its previous elections with new ones.

Hon. Justice Phillips gave the hint during an on- the –spot assessment of the offices of the Electoral Officers in Kosofe and Somolu Local Governments as well as in Agboyi Ketu, Ikosi – Isheri and Bariga Local Council Development Areas of the State.

The Chairman, however, stressed that despite the plans of the Commission to replace the obsolete ballot boxes with new ones, the old ones must be properly stored and preserved in the various Local Government Councils where they are currently.

She, therefore, appealed to the authorities of the various Local Government Councils to assist the Commission in ensuring proper storage of the ballot boxes, thereby preventing them from avoidable damage.

Also in a chat with reporters during the tour, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Olumide Lawal, expressed confidence that the tour would bring remarkable improvement to the offices of Electoral Officers in the 57 LGAs and LCDAs of the State.

Mr. Lawal stressed that with the brief discussions the Commission had with many of the Sole Administrators of the Councils  and the assurances given by the Council bosses to ensure that the Electoral Officers were given conducive offices, he had no doubt that they would fulfil their promises.

He, however, added that despite the assurances given by the authorities of many of the Councils already visited by the Commission, the Commission would still formally present its observations on the state of the offices to the Councils.

So far, the Commission has inspected the offices of Electoral Officers in  44 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas of the State. The tour continues next week.
