Man 22 caught stealing cables inside military barracks

A 22-year-old unemployed man, Samuel Archibong has been arrested by men of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for stealing electrical cables inside a military barracks in Lagos.

Archibong was caught on January 11, at about 4:25am, at the NAF Barracks, Legico Bus Stop, Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island.

The Nation learnt that he was found in possession of five and a half feet of 3,000 volts electrical cable valued at N20,000, belonging to Eko Electricity Distribution Company.

Archibong was handed over to the Victoria Island Police Division, Lagos which arraigned him on January 16 on a count charge of stealing before Mrs A. A. Adetunji of an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

He pleaded guilty and the court adjourned till yesterday for sentencing.

Prosecuting Corporal Friday Mameh, who reviewed the facts, said the stolen item was immediately recovered from Archibong.

He tendered the defendant’s confessional statement and a letter from the Air Force and said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Archibong admmitted the facts to be correct.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Adetunji sentenced him to 200 hours of community service at the Lagos Island General Hospital.

She said the sentence took effect with immediate effect and that Archibong would perform his duties five hours every day till the 200 hours were over.

The court also ordered that he should provide a surety who would ensure that he adhered to the terms of the sentence.
