Death toll in Nigeria’s accident air strike rises to 90

Death toll in Tuesday’s accidental air strike on a displaced persons’ camp in Nigeria’s northeastern Rann town has risen to 90, according to latest estimates by relief agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) or doctors without borders.“Around 90 people were killed when a Nigerian airforce plane circled twice and dropped two bombs in the middle of the town of Rann, which hosts thousands of internally displaced people,” the agency said in a statement early Friday.

The body also said locals and community leaders are putting the figure of the dead at around 170.

“This figure needs to be confirmed. The victims of this horrifying event deserve a transparent account of what happened and the circumstances in which this attack took place,” Bruno Jochum, MSF General Director, was quoted as saying.

Nigerian authorities, meanwhile, have inaugurated a probe panel on the mistaken air strike by government’s fighter jet which the military said had targeted a gathering of Boko militants in Kala Balge area of the restive Borno state.

Several human rights groups have called on the government to compensate the victims of the strike,  with the Amnesty International saying claims that the incident was accidental should not stop the victims and their families from being compensated.

The six-man panel will submit its report on February 2.
