Navy admits, says ‘We are in The Gambia for training’

By Olaolu Oladipo, Lagos
The High Command of the Nigerian Navy has admitted the deployment of warships to the tiny West African nation of The Gambia.
According to the Navy, its warships are in The Gambia for what it termed “flag-showing and West Africa training” exercise.
Making the admission on Wednesday was the Spokesman for the Navy, Captain Dahun Jahun.
The admission has thus put to rest days of speculation that the Navy might be part of the forces being deployed by the subregional group, ECOWAS to help maintain peace ahead of the inauguration of Mr. Adama Barrow as the president of the tiny West African nation.
Captain Jahun made the disclosure when he responded to local media reports that the warship was a show of force in an effort to get Gambia’s president, Yahya Jammeh to step down.
The West African regional bloc Ecowas has said a standby military force is ready to intervene if President Yahya Jammeh doesn’t leave after losing elections.
But Gambian lawmakers have just extended Jammeh’s term by three months.
Jahun also stated that the Nigeria’s Air Force is contributing 200 troops for the standby force.
