My move to China was for Nigeria’s sake-Mikel

By Femi Adefioye, Lagos with agency reports
The Super Eagles’ defensive midfielder, John Obi Mikel has stated that he decided to relocated to China in the pursuit of his career in the interest of the country.
Obi recently signed a three-year contract with Chinese Premier League side Tianjin Teda, after failing to break into Antonio Conte’s Chelsea team.
On Thursday Mikel explained that the move was to help him stay match-fit for the Super Eagles, and did not hinge on the fact that he will be earning double his Chelsea wages.
“I could easily have stayed in Chelsea for the remaining six months of my contract but it won’t be in the best interest of my nation, as they need me match fit when the World Cup 2018 qualifiers resume,” the 29-year-old told Owngoalnigeria.com.
“It wasn’t an easy decision to make but I seriously need matches to stay fit for Nigeria. Nigerians don’t deserve to miss out on the World Cup after back to back failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.”
