Eagles move up in FIFA rankings, now world’s 50th team

By Femi Adefioye, Lagos
The national football team, the Super Eagles has jumped one spot to 7th on the African continent.
The development has seen the team climb up to the 50th spot in the global rankings as seen in the latest FIFA World ranking released on Thursday.
The Super Eagles climbed despite going through a quiet period since the 3-1 win over Algeria in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Three-time Africa Champions will miss the 2017 AFCON in Gabon, which kicks off in two days time.
FIFA even acknowledge Nigeria’s rise into the top 50, saying “Despite the overall stability of the January table, two new teams have broken into the Top 50. Saudi Arabia (48, up 6) and Nigeria (50, up 1) move up at the expense of Albania (51, down 2) and Burkina Faso (53, down 3).”
The next FIFA World Ranking will be published on 9 February 2017.
