PDP chieftain, supporters dump party for APC in Abia

By Emmanuel Achike, Umuahia

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Chief Uche Akwukwegbu alongside his hordes of supporters have formally joined the All progressives Congress (APC).

The event took place during a stakeholders meeting of the party held at the country home of a former member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of APC, Hon. Obioma Acho at Umuopara, Umuahia, the state capital.

Addressing newsmen on behalf of other defectors, Chief Akwukwegbu said they decided to leave PDP for APC because the party has failed Abians, particularly in the past nine years.

“We sympathized with Abians, we regret being party to the mess they’ve been through particularly in the past nine years and that is why we have come today to apologize to them.

“We are people who believe in the masses and who believe that the right thing must be done and that is why we’ve abandoned PDP to join APC, the moving train”.

BAWAS as he is fondly called by his supporters said he personally decided to leave PDP because of the sufferings of Abians in the hands of the party in the past years which has culminated in the non-payment of workers salary over the months.

“The immediate past government in the state was horrible and terrible; this present government should be independent of itself and work towards tiding up the arrears of workers salary”, he said

He enjoined Abians who were yet to join the APC to see the things some of them saw and make the necessary move to save the state from the hands of those he described as few cabals in the PDP who he alleged have hijacked the state’s commonwealth.

The Prime Minister of Ibeku noted that APC was not going back, stressing that come 2019, the party would produce the next governor in Abia State as well as win other political seats.

Receiving the decamped former PDP members, state chairman of APC, Chief Donatus Nwankpa while recounting the recent joining of the former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor kalu to the party, was delighted with the caliber of men and women who have moved over to APC in the state.

Nwankpa expressed optimism that with these heavy political weights in its fold, the APC will form the next government in Abia state.

Speaking in the same vein, a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Acho Obioma urged the APC state executives to work harder to ensure the party’s success in the state.

After the defection ceremony, a delegation of APC in Abia state led by Senator Chris Adighije, in a move described as reconciliatory, visited a member Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party, Prince Benjamin Apugo at his Nkata Ibeku residence in Umuahia, the state capital.
