The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has advised workers and pensioners in the state to be watchful so that politicians do not use them as propaganda objects.
The APC said that a retired civil servant on pension is on the payroll of the government and should not covertly or overtly allow himself or herself to be abused for adversarial political propaganda against the state.
The party was reacting to the public feeding of pensioners by opposition politicians and a compulsorily retired judge of the state high court in Osogbo on last Monday.
According to the party, ‘ the event was a display of sham hospitality by those who are fixated on delegitimising and slandering the APC government led by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
In a statement from the party’s Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi, the Party stated that what the show was intended for was to call on the federal authorities to investigate the disbursement of the N11.7 billion recently made available to the state for payment of salaries and pensions.
‘They could have done so without making pensioners – who were covered by the payment recently disbursed – their object of ridicule, the party said.
The APC however, described as ‘utter nonsense and a tissue of lies’, the purported amount spent by Aregbesola to pay salaries and pensions, and challenged anybody who cared to know the facts to come over to Osogbo and verify.
‘It is a pity’, the party said ‘ that a false news has now replaced facts in many news reports around the world,’ adding that ‘this is the traditional weapon of the opposition in the state’.
The party rejected a situation in which uninformed people give greater credence to false news than facts, pointing out that only days before this hospitality event in Osogbo, the governor had given a blow by blow account of how he disbursed money for salaries and pensions in two weeks covering Sept., Oct., Nov and Dec., before the new year. ‘The account is in the public domain for everybody who cared to read and if in doubt, to verify’.
The party therefore declared that no amount of slander, blackmail and negative publicity will diminish the facts of what has been done by Gov. Aregbesola for the good of Osun people despite the challenges confronting the state.
‘Those behind the ‘Internally Displaced Pensioners Camp’ in Osogbo are exploiters whose motive are political than humanitarian’, the party said.
