Borehole drillers to increase fees over hike in exchange rates

By Abimbola Fashakin, Lagos

Members of the Association of Water Drillers and Rig-owners Practitioners (AWDROP) have served a notice of a possible hike in fees being paid by patrons across the country.

According to the association, the decision might not be unconnected to the hike the exchange rates of major currencies against the Naira.

To actualize this objective, the association has strengthen the task force it set up to monitor and supervise drilling activities in the country.

National President of AWDROP, Mr. Michael Ale stated this in a statement signed and made available to newsmen in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday.

In the statement, Ale said,” What is the justification in increase in borehole materials but decrease in costing of borehole by respective clients. For financial sustainability and efficient borehole usage, it is important that Nigerians become price wise and not be deceived with low pricing of borehole project.

“Many boreholes drilled in Nigeria by non-professionals have contaminated our most precious underground resources, thus resulting in illness for many innocent Nigerians.”

Ale advised that the Federal Government should immediately invest in water quality survey involving testing of wells and boreholes as incentives to Nigerians that has embarked on water projects for themselves.

Ale commended the Minister of Water Resources, Engr Suleiman Adamu and his team on the launch of the PEWASH an instrument that will give all Nigerians good access to safe drinking water.
