Members of the Ilorin Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) have urged the Federal Government to complete all the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation of federal highways in Kwara State before the rainy season sets in.

They also called for the establishment of a Federal College of Education in the state.

National President of IEDPU, Alhaji AbdulHamid Adi said this at 51st annual conference of the union in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

Adi, who commended the Federal Government for prioritising the road projects in the state that he also noted were long abandoned, said the completion would not only fast-track transport services but also improve the state’s economy.

“It is worthy of note that the Federal Government has begun to reconstruct and rehabilitate some highways leading to Kwara state. We are not unaware that some of the roads suffered neglect in the hands of previous governments and that is why the roads were in deplorable conditions.

“But we are delighted to see that the government started working on the roads upon its assumption of office. We want to however, appeal to the government to expedite action on the roads so that they can be completed before the rain sets in. The completion of the roads will not only fast-track transport services but also the economy, which is currently in recession”, Adi said.

As a measure to address problem of multitudes of admission seekers into higher institutions, Adi called on stakeholders from Ilorin home and abroad to pull resources together for the establishment of more private universities in the town.

“We note with concern the growing number of students seeking admission into higher institutions of learning across the country. But we want to plead with the rich among the indigenes of Ilorin both home and abroad, to support the idea of establishing more higher institutions in Ilorin so that we can accommodate more admission seekers, especially indigenes of Ilorin who have flair for education”, he said.

In his address, the Kwara state Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, restated his commitment to the overall development of the state.
