Reps will grant autonomy to local governments, says Gbajabiamila

By Joshua Olalekan, Lagos
The Leader of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has expressed the readiness of the Special Committee on Constitution Amendment to grant autonomy to councils in the country in the ongoing amendment to the 1999 constitution.
In a statement released by his Media Assistant, Olanrewaju Smart on Friday, Gbajabiamila stated this while fielding questions from representatives of Community Development Associations at an interactive session in his constituency on Thursday.
“We are working on the autonomy for local government in fact we passed it in the 7th Assembly but President Jonathan did not sign it. We are working on it again and there will be autonomy for local government.
“I know most of the Governors do not want it, not because they don’t like it but truly if we look at true federalism there are only two tiers of government, local government is part of the state government but because it has been abused here in Nigeria that is why everyone seems to be in support of local government autonomy.”
Gbajabiamila in his address also sought for the patience of his constituents on the state of the economy.
“Recession is affecting the top to the bottom, this government is doing its best. This recession is actually because Nigeria is no longer making money as it ought to.
The oil came down from $100 to about $30 when this Government came in. Imagine you are a farmer and the head of the House with five children and you make 10,000 per month then all of a sudden a natural disaster occurred in your farm and you start making 2,000 Naira monthly. It means your family will have to adjust. Most importantly for us in government to cut excesses.”
