UK court clears Ibori, orders ex-governor’s release from prison

By Our Correspondent

A Crown Court sitting in London, United Kingdom has cleared the way for the release of a former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori from Prison.

The court on Wednesday ordered the Home Office free Ibori upon completion of his 13 year jail term after entertaining a suit by the former governor seeking the enforcement of fundamental human rights challenging the decision of the Home Office to have him kept in detention to face assets forfeiture suit.

Ibori, who completed his 13-year sentence (served 6 1/2) on Tuesday and was released on Wednesday morning from a London prison.

The UK’s Home Office in a last minute bid tried to block his release on the premise that his assets confiscation hearing remained inconclusive.

Ruling Wednesday, presiding Judge, Mrs. Justice May, who heard an emergency appeal filed by Ibori to enforce his rights, however refused the Home Office’s request to further hold him in prison and ordered his immediate release without conditions.
