By Olaolu Oladipo, Lagos
Indications have emerged on Friday indicating that the Presidency has epressed williness to broker truce with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The Federal Government has therefore dispatched a former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kanu to broker the deal, details of which is yet to be revealed as at the time of filing this report.
Kalu who confimed the development in a post on his social media page, facebook said he was a guest of the detained IPOB leader at the Kuje Prisons on Friday.
“Today, I visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Kuje Prison and we engaged in a very long discussion. Kanu is my brother and a son of the soil. He shouldn’t be where he is because Kuje Prison is not his home. It is therefore my utmost concern to see him regain his freedom like every other Nigerian,” he wrote.
Though the details of the discussions that ensued between them was not fully captured in the post, competent sources within the Presidency told BLACKFACE that indeed, the Federal Government is desirous of ending the logjam between it and members of the seperatist group.
“The focus of the government towards the principles and activities of the group has shifted and what will be happening in the net few weeks will show that to the whole world,” the source stated in a telephone chat with our correspondent.
According to the source who pleaded not to be mentioned, the Federal Government has elected not to see the group as a terrorist one or consider its members as capable injuring the corporate existence of the country as one indesoluble whole.
On the choice of Kalu as the mediator, the source stated that though the Federal Government did not set out on its own to invite the former governor, the source said, “it was him, I mean Kalu who voluteered to broker the peace and the Presidency gave its blessings.”
While maintaining that the visit was an exploratory one, the source added that “it could be the needed window to finally put the agitation to rest.”
