After picketing NASS, Super Falcons to get allowances for AWCON victory

Members of the nation’s female national team, the Super Falcons are to get full payment of all their entitlements from the Federal Government on Thursday.
This was as a result of a peaceful protest march by them over their unpaid bonuses and allowances around Abuja the Federal Capital territory on Wednesday.
The main area of target was the premises of the National Assembly Complex which coincided with President Muhammadu Buhari’s arrival at the complex to present the 2017 budget.
The team won the 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations by beating hosts Cameroon 1-0 in the final on December 3, then marched to the Presidential Villa shortly after the departure of President Muhammadu Buhari.
At the villa, the Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari, addressed them and assured that they would be paid in the next two days.
The players have refused to leave the hotel they were accommodated in by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) until they were paid.
They were asking to be paid their match bonuses amounting to $17,150 (about N7 million) each, as well as other allowances totalling about $8,000 (about N3.2m).
Kyari told them the Federal Government was aware of their situation and promised it would be resolved within two days.
The players later decided to go back to their hotel and wait for the Federal Government to fulfil its promise.
It is not the first time the Super Falcons and the NFF have clashed over unpaid bonuses and allowances.
In 2004, the team stayed back in their hotel in South Africa for three days after then NFA failed to pay their bonuses for winning the 4th African Women Championship.
NFF’s teams have frequently been affected by pay disputes, with coaches regularly going unpaid and players boycotting training during qualifiers or at tournaments over unpaid bonuses.
This had led to NFF cutting down the number of teams’ backroom staff and slashing the salaries and allowances of the various national team coaches.
