Drama as Ondo CJ’s policemen, litigants clash in court room

By Samuel Faleye, Akure

There was a mild drama at the Ondo State High Court complex in Akure, as a clash ensued between policemen attached to the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olasehinde Kumuyi and some litigants.

The incidence occured when the litigants, Olu Osore and Oladipupo Olokunjuwon and some members of the Olokunjuwon family with their lawyers, Dapo Agbede and Morakinyo Ogele were in the court over a land dispute.

The legal battle with the suit No AK/173/2012, had been existing since four years ago.

Eye witness account states that drama began when the applicant’s lawyers, Agbede and Ogele staged a walk out immediately the judge read his ruling which was not favoured to their client.

Their grouse was that Kumuyi has no legal right to give ruling on the matter which was already pending at the Court of Appeal.

They particularly said the court has fixed February 22, for the hearing of the motion seeking to compel Kumuyi to make record of proceeding of the land dispute pending before him available to lawyers handling the case and for him to hand off the suit.

The lawyers insisted that since an appeal had been filed against the earlier decision of the court to furnish it with record of proceedings; the lower court should adjourn sine die in order to allow the appellate court to decide the appeal before it.

But, Kumuyi told the two lawyers that they are free to leave his court room and vowed to go ahead with his ruling.

In an attempt to leave the court room immediately their lawyers left, the Chief judge allegedly ordered his security aides to arrest Osore.

The policemen grabbed Osore’s trouser but other members of his family, who shouted restricted the arrest.

They vowed that they would not allow the police to arrest their brother except the chief judge will order the arrest of all members of the family in the court.

Their fisticuffs lasted for 20minutes and their noise also disrupted activities in order court room in that complex.

Kumuyi, however ordered his policemen to free Osore.
