El Kanemi Warriors have emerged as winners of the inaugural edition of the North East pre-season tournament which was concluded in Gombe on Thursday evening.
The Borno Army staged a comeback from their unimpressive start to lift the pre-season tourney.
The Borno Army defeated hosts Gombe United 2-1 in the pulsating final tie played at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe to lift the giant trophy in a revenge tie of the initial fixture which ended 2-0 in favour of the hosts on Monday evening.
El kanemi Warriors drew the first blood in the third minute through returnee striker, Efe Yarhere but Gombe United leveled up the tie 12 minutes later through a spot kick converted by Ibrahim Abdullahi after one of the Desert Scorpions’ strikers was felled in the 18 yard box.
The Maiduguri side still dominated play in the second half and it was no surprise they shot into the lead again in the 69th minute through tournament’s highest scorer, Matthias Samuel who got his third goal of the tourney and his side’s second goal of the match to ensure that the Ladan Bosso led team end the game as winners.
Head coach of El Kanemi Warriors, Ladan Bosso stated that he was delighted with the way his wards responded after their initial hiccup in the tournament to still gather enough strength and courage to win the title and he also praised the organizers of the tournament for helping him spot areas he must still work on before the start of the league season.
“I am extremely happy that we have won the tournament despite the way we started. It was not easy to recover the way we did after losing to the same side during our first meeting on Monday this week. I am grateful to the organizers of this tournament for making me spot areas that my team must improve on before the start of the premier league season,” Bosso told Goal.
