BRT drivers embark on warning strike over poor welfare

By Joshua Olalekan, Lagos

Drivers of Safest Kayways Transport, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) franchise operator have embarked on a warning strike that left many commuters along those routes stranded.

The strike had however been called off as the management showed enough commitment to address all the grievances of the striking drivers.

“We started a warning strike this morning to press home our demand for a the payment of all our outstanding allowances, and the regular payment of our salaries to enable us meet our responsibilities,” one of the striking drivers said.

The driver who would not want his name mentioned, said he and his colleagues were protesting shoddy welfare package by Safest Kayways Limited management.

According to him the drivers have been denied virtually all their allowances, the latest being the food allowance which the company stopped two months ago.

This, he said, is compounded by the fact that their salaries are being delayed unnecessarily. He said the earlier drivers ever get paid our salaries is the second week of the new month, a development that has made worse their parlous situation.

He said many of the drivers are finding it difficult providing for their families. Using himself as an example, he said, his three children have been sent out of school because he has been unable to pay their school fees.

“While we are already discussing with them on the need to increase the salary, our immediate grievance was to make sure they pay what they had promised to be paying promptly, so that we would be able to meet our obligations to our family”, he said.

Investigation however revealed that the management have swung into action and had called the drivers to sheath their swords.

Attempts to get an official statement from the transport company have however remained futile as non of its Transport Managers (TM) agreed to comment on the development.

“We cannot comment on issues relating to the welfare of any member of staff,” one of the TM’s said yesterday.

Telephone calls made to the Managing Director’s line also went unanswered, neither was the text message sent to his phone number answered.
