Ondo poll: Policemen protest over non-payment of allowance

By Samuel Faleye, Akure

Police personnel deployed to Ondo East and West local government areas of Ondo State during the last governorship election have protested over non-payment of their duty allowances.

They reportedly staged the protest at the Funbi-Fagun Police Division in Ondo town, complaining that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the division failed to pay them their allowances.

The protesting police personnel blocked the Ondo/Ile-Ife express road with two of the patrol vehicles used for the monitoring of the election and they prevented passersby from passing the road during the protest.

The protest caused serious traffic jam on the busy express road for several hours.

Commercial and social activities were halted in the area while the protest lasted.

Also, many passengers were stranded as a result of the protest, travelers were delayed for several hours on the road.

Some aggrieved police personnel who spoke to newsmen alleged that the senior police officers in the division shared the money meant for their allowances.

They alleged that many of them who worked during the election were not given the allowances meant for them, while the senior Police Officers who did not work were given the money meant for them.
