Group of Christian professionals and opinion leaders have tasked the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, to order for the completion of the remaining National and State Assembly rerun elections in Rivers State. The Group under aegis of Club 401, made this call on yesterday when they paid a courtesy call to the Rivers State INEC office in Port Harcourt to submit a petition to the National Chairman via the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state.

Speaking, the Chairman of the Group, Elder Lawrence Jumbo, said the group is worried that the legislative elections which the INEC started since March have not been concluded till date.

Jumbo, while handing in the letter to the REC, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, lamented that some ethnic groups in the state do not have representatives at state and national level to meet their needs and resolve issues affecting them.

Jumbo said, “We are all sons and daughters of Rivers State and we are very concerned that we are not being represented at the National level. Some of us have problems and we need to go to our Representatives.”

Responding, the Rivers State Electoral Commissioner, Elder Ikoiwak, stressed that the State office is working tirelessly with the National office to ensure that a new date is fixed for the remaining elections.

Ikoiwak urged the two major parties in the state to withdraw all cases they have taken to court so that there could be a smooth elections.

The REC stated that conducting elections with some cases in courts may lead one of the parties to go back to the same court at the end of the elections when he loses out.

“We are appealing to those who have gone to court on both camps to voluntarily withdraw these cases from the courts to make a good platform for the elections to be conducted.

“This is because even if we conduct the elections one party may still go to the court to say, the court has made a pronouncement but INEC still went ahead to conduct elections, which may still lead us to conduct a rerun elections, all the same a new date will be fixed soon”, he said.
