GOVERNOR OLUSEGUN MIMIKO THREAT TO PUBLIC PEACE IS CONDEMNABLE

Following Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s visit on October 28th, 2016 to President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock, the seat of the federal government intimating him with information about a likely threat to public peace in the state as a result of INEC’s recognition and publication of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the authentic governorship candidate of the PDP for the November 26th, 2016 Ondo State Governorship election, tongues have started wagging about the propriety or otherwise of the visit.

While one recognizes the position of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko as the chief security officer of the state and his constitutional responsibility to ensure peace and tranquility at all times, one is shocked and alarmed like millions of Nigerians, by his veiled threat after the meeting with Mr. President, whereby in addressing the media, he threatened that INEC’s recognition of Jimoh Ibrahim as PDP candidate will not be allowed to stand.

While one commends Governor Olusegun Mimiko for not toeing the path of irresponsibility and illegality as recently exhibited by his colleagues, Governors Ayodele Fayose and Nyesom Wike of Ekiti and Rivers states, who assaulted the constitution by personally leading thugs and miscreants to obstruct law enforcements agencies in the discharge of their constitutional duties, however, one frowns at his threat to public peace which is a violation of his constitutional oath.

We condemn in its entirety, this irresponsible, barbaric, reckless and provocative threat to public peace by Governor Olusegun Mimiko. We regard this threat as an assault on the constitution by a custodian of legitimate authority derived from the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Governor Mimiko needs to be reminded and educated that INEC as the electoral management body of Nigeria, is a creation of the constitution and it is constitutionally bound to conduct its activities in line with provisions of the electoral act which is also a creation of the constitution.

By recognizing Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the authentic candidate of the PDP for the Ondo State gubernatorial election, INEC as an unbiased umpire, is only performing its constitutional responsibility of obedience to the constitution by obeying the judgement of a federal high court in Abuja as directed.

However, one is amused that Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has transformed from being the governor of Ondo state to an interpreter of a court judgement written in black and white, for reasons other than the collective interest of the people of Ondo state, this very unfortunate.

Instead of running to Abuja and issuing veiled threat to public peace, Dr. Mimiko needs to be admonished that if he and his faction of the PDP are aggrieved, the most responsible and constitutional step to take, is to approach a court of superior jurisdiction for remedy.

For our information, it is important to remind Nigerians that the recently concluded Edo state gubernatorial election had to be postponed by three (3) weeks due to security threat and it is imperative and dangerous for us all, not to take the threat to public peace by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, lightly.

Therefore in the light of this development, it is important to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the security heads to place security agencies on red alert before, during and after the Ondo state gubernatorial election.

One also want to alert Nigerians and indeed the international community, that by this threat, Governor Olusegun Mimiko has publicly exposed his desire and interest for the Ondo people as his tenure winds down and thus must be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order before, during and after the Ondo State gubernatorial election on 26th November, 2016.
